LAWRENCE — The water rushing over the Route 28 dam is not just a sign of this summer's torrential rainstorms, it also means repairs to the historic Great Stone Dam are at a standstill for at least the next couple of weeks.
Boaters were bracing for the water level to drop sharply, allowing for another summer of dam repairs. But more than 13 1/2 inches of rain fell on the Merrimack Valley since June, halting construction. Read full article...
Dude, where's my car? Friends, police pull rusted throwaways from Merrimack River

METHUEN - There were bubbles, and then a tire popped to the surface. The water around it turned brown as mud shook loose into the Merrimack River.
What came next was a truck - or what was left of it. "Where's the rest of the car?" Rocky Morrison asked as the chassis was pulled from the water.
"Um ... Newburyport?" tow driver Scott Tomkiewicz guessed, only half-joking. The, as yet, unidentified truck, most of it disintegrated and the rest attacked by small bugs and slimy river life, was one of 22 vehicles that Morrison, Tomkiewicz and a dozen other people tried to pull from the river yesterday.

DRACUT -- First it was one car, then another, and another. From his barge on the Merrimack River, Rocky Morrison could spot the submerged vehicles on a stretch of river: 22 by his count.
Morrison, a 42-year-old construction worker from Salem, N.H., has organized several cleanup projects along the river, fishing out old car parts, engines, tires and whatever else doesn't belong there, and hoisting them onto his vessel with a hook and crane.
